2017 Small Lot Series Mourvèdre

2017 Small Lot Series Mourvèdre
2017 Small Lot Series Mourvèdre

"From my formative years as a winemaker in Washington, to trips to the Northern Rhone and Northern Spain, all the way to my work in the Snake River Valley, Mourvèdre has been a variety that fascinates and delights me. It's the non-fruit flavors in Mourvèdre that draw me in the most: the spices, the earth, the leather & tobacco leaf notes. As a late-ripening fruit, I don't always showcase Mourvèdre on it's own. In cooler years, it may not be as robust as I would want a stand-alone wine to be, but it still contains those fascinating flavors to add to a blend. In optimal years, I love to showcase it, and it provides a savory counterpart to the many fruit-forward wines we make at Cinder."

Tasting notes

You'll encounter aromas such as pepper and black licorice that will be followed by flavors of sage, coffee and smoked meats with a hint of dried plums. This Small Lot Series experiment drinks like an Old-World wine and leaves you wanting more!

Production notes

The Mourvèdre was hand harvested and fermented in 1 ton bins with 4 punch-downs per day. Grapes are pressed after an average 7 days of skin contact. Malolactic fermentation takes place in barrel where we age the wine for 16 months in 21% 2nd and 3rd use barrels, and 79% old barrels of American and French origin. The wine was bottled in February 2019.

Other notes

Get yourself to Rupert's in McCall, Idaho and ask the wonderful Chef Gary Kucy for his famous elk tartar— perhaps with a side of Idaho morels. Then crack open this win, enjoy the view of Payette Lake and experience the different flavors that dance on your tongue!

When to drink: During the first year, decant for an hour & then enjoy. While approachable early in its life, this wine will continue to evolve beautifully over the next 15 years. The tannic profile will calm in a couple of years— great cellar potential.
