This was my first effort to produce a red wine with foot stomping. I had gotten the idea from a friend in Washington and had been able to taste multiple examples of it on a trip to the Northern Rhone. I loved the earthy, spicy, brooding flavors, and broad tannins that the technique produced. We continue to use this technique every year but only highlight it occasionally in small bottlings.

 

As for how this wine is tasting, I think it really exudes earthy, brambly notes. It's a very interesting contrast to the cleaner fruit notes of a Syrah made with modern destemming equipment. It seems like an appropriate wine to drink with something that hearkens back to an earlier time, with more primitive food and more primitive wine. I'd love to try it with game of all sorts, especially elk, goat or duck."

“What jumps out immediately is the color retention. Eight years later, we still have a brilliant dark red center and a magenta rim in the glass. After nearly a decade in the bottle, the aromas have mellowed and integrated into an orchestra of notes that include black olives & cedar mulch. Earth and spice flavors such as eucalyptus and stewed plums have evolved at a gorgeous and approachable level. The body is medium plus and the finish is still incredibly bright and oh so long!”

Production notes

The Foot Stomp Syrah is part of our Small Lot Series which allows us to explore unusual varieties and winemaking techniques with our Wine Club Members. Back in 2010, we selected low-yield, small berry grapes from the Williamson Vineyard, hand picked the fruit, then had a group of our favorite wait staff wash their feet (lightly!) and jump in the bins to crush the grapes. Next, the native yeast present on the grapes took care of the fermentation. We then aged the wine for 17 months in our oldest barrels and bottled the wine unfiltered. 

Melanie and Joe have now re-released 15 bottles from their Private Collection nearly a decade later to be enjoyed by some of Cinder's most invested Wine Club Members. Here are some additional notes on the 2010 Foot Stomp Syrah:

Other notes

Medium body and high acid make this wine very food friendly. It can be paired with lightly spiced meat dishes like pork chops and simply prepared steaks or paired with gamier, earthier dishes. Elk lasagna or sweet Italian sausage with dark greens and pasta are some of our favorites.

Williamson Vineyard, located on the Sunny Slope south of Caldwell, contributed 100% of the grapes. Located with a beautiful view of the Snake River, the vineyard has sandy-loam soils with traces of chalk on a hot south-facing slope.
